Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the Complex Systems Science Laboratory! We welcome students who are interested in pursuing studies and research in the broad area of complex systems. There are several pathways to join our laboratory:

  • Research Student: A flexible option to focus on specific research topics under my guidance before formally enrolling in a degree program.
  • Master's course: Special Selection for International Students: Designed for non-Japanese students living outside Japan to directly join the graduate school.
  • MEXT Scholarship: A prestigious scholarship offering financial support to exceptional students.
  • Doctoral Program: An opportunity to pursue your Ph.D. with us, with potential financial support and a strong focus on advancing your academic and professional career.

Please read the following guidelines carefully to determine the best option for you. I look forward to working with motivated and talented individuals eager to explore the field of complex systems.

  • Research Student

Carefully read the Hiroshima University Research Students webpage for detailed guidelines and procedures. Research students ("kenkyuusei") are admitted to pursue specific research topics under the supervision of an assigned faculty member for a period of 6 months or 1 year. Note: Research students do not receive degrees upon completing their research work. Most applicants seeking admission to a graduate school at Hiroshima University begin as research students before advancing to formal graduate programs. If you are interested in applying, please follow the steps below.
    1. Complete the designated form to initiate the approval process with Professor Ogura for your application as a Research Student at the Complex Systems Science Laboratory. If you encounter any issues while completing the form, please contact Professor Ogura directly.
    2. If your application passes the prescreening stage, you will be contacted by a staff member to arrange a 15-minute interview.
    3. Upon successfully passing the interview, a representative from the graduate school will contact you to guide you through the final steps of the application process.
  • Master's Course: Special Selection for International Students

Depending on your academic background, you may qualify to apply for the Special Selection for International Students [For Students Living Outside Japan] and begin your studies directly at the graduate school. Enrollments typically take place in April and October, with application periods generally being in early November and early May. Please check the most updated dates on the Hiroshima University Graduate School website to ensure accuracy.

Carefully read the Hiroshima University Admission Guide for detailed guidelines and procedures. The Special Selection for International Students is designed for non-Japanese students living outside Japan who wish to pursue a Master's program at Hiroshima University. The selection process includes document screening and an oral examination conducted online. Applicants must fulfill all conditions outlined in the application guide, including submitting a consent form from their prospective academic supervisor. If you are interested in applying, please follow the steps below.

    1. Complete the designated form to initiate the process of obtaining approval from Professor Masaki Ogura for your application in the Special Selection for International Students at the Complex Systems Science Laboratory, Hiroshima University. If you encounter any issues while completing the form, contact Professor Ogura directly.

    2. If your application passes the prescreening stage, you will be contacted by a staff member to arrange a 30-minute interview.

    3. Upon successfully passing the interview, you will be contacted by a representative from the graduate school to complete the final steps of your application process.

  • MEXT Scholarship

I have experience accommodating students funded by the MEXT Scholarship.

For the MEXT Scholarship (Embassy Recommendation), please carefully review the Hiroshima University webpage . Additional contact information can be found on this page . I am affiliated with the Informatics and Data Science Program.

In some cases, the graduate school may invite applications through faculty members. If you are interested in applying, please follow the steps outlined below.

    1. Complete the designated form to initiate the process of obtaining approval from Professor Masaki Ogura for your application for the MEXT Scholarship at the Graduate School. If you encounter any issues while completing the form, please contact Professor Ogura directly.

    2. If your application passes the prescreening stage, a staff member will contact you to schedule a 30-minute interview.

    3. Upon successfully passing the interview, you will receive further instructions on how to proceed with your application.

  • Doctoral Program

I have extensive experience advising doctoral students from various countries. Some of my students have successfully secured faculty positions immediately after completing their Ph.D., while others have completed their Ph.D. in as little as two years. If you are interested in pursuing your Ph.D. in our laboratory, please start by sending me an email with your CV. Financial support opportunities are available through the graduate school. Frequently Asked Questions

I am not yet officially assigned to the lab, but I am interested. Can I visit or join activities?
Yes, you are very welcome.
Even before official assignment, undergraduate students may observe lab meetings or have individual consultations. It is perfectly fine if you simply want to learn about the lab atmosphere or research topics. Some students start participating at an early stage.
If you would like to visit or consult, please contact us via https://csslab.jp/en/contact/ or email Masaki Ogura (oguram@hiroshima-u.ac.jp) directly.
The research sounds difficult. Will I be able to keep up at my current level?
Yes, that is not a problem.
Very few students have sufficient specialized knowledge at the time they join. In our lab, we start by reviewing basic concepts and tools together, then gradually move into research. We assume that students begin without full understanding.
I am an Information Science student, but I do not have much background in control or mathematics.
Many students start from the same position.
We typically begin with programming and data analysis, and introduce control and mathematical concepts as needed. There is no requirement to have a systematic background from the start.
What kinds of research topics are available?
We work on swarm control, behavioral control of fish schools and insect swarms, weather and environmental systems, and integration of deep learning with mathematical models.
Research topics are not assigned unilaterally; they are determined through discussion based on students’ interests and strengths. Consultation is possible even before official assignment.
How much programming skill is required?
We often use Python or MATLAB for simulations and data analysis.
However, advanced skills are not required at the beginning. Necessary skills are acquired naturally through the research process.
Do students work on their thesis alone?
No. Students conduct research through discussions with the supervisor and senior lab members. We emphasize learning how to think and conduct research through regular meetings and daily consultations. The environment is open and discussion-friendly, even for undergraduate students.
I have not decided on my future career yet. Is that okay?
Yes, that is completely fine.
Through research, students develop logical thinking, programming skills, and the ability to organize complex problems. We also provide lab-wide support and consultation regarding career decisions.
Are there fixed core hours?
In principle, there are no fixed core hours in Ogura Lab.
We respect lectures and individual life rhythms, and value an environment where students can work at their own pace.
Can the lab provide equipment such as keyboards or mice?
Equipment necessary for research can be discussed.
We believe that daily equipment such as keyboards and mice significantly affects efficiency and comfort. Depending on research needs, we provide appropriate equipment, including high-quality devices, through consultation with the supervisor.
